Prayer

Prayer is a crucial part of our life together and we usually meet once a month for prayer. This might be an evening together or breakfast and prayer.

Wednesday December 10th 7.30pm

Advent Prayer Evening

Please fell welcome to come and pray with us for all the events happening over Advent.

We believe that it is through prayer that God works and moves in us individually and as a community.

If you would like us to pray for you please email your request

A privilege to pray

What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. It’s a familiar line from that well-loved hymn, but it’s also far more than that: it’s a Christian truth that we should take to heart.

Whether it’s a quick prayer uttered in a time of crisis to getting down on your knees and giving heartfelt prayers of intercession, the simple truth is that we can carry everything to God – and he hears our prayers.

When you stop to think about it, it’s incredible. We come to God in all kinds of mood – angry, sad, happy or placid – and he listens. David knew this when he was writing his Psalms, coming to God with all kinds of requests, petitions, praise and songs of joy.

He was happy to talk to God at all times, in all situations and at every point, something from which many of us can learn.

For us as humans, that listening part is equally incredible. Praying all at once, God can cut through the babble to hear each and every request. It’s a mystery of faith but one on which we can depend.

The Bible also assures us that God answers our prayers. Again, this can be difficult to accept because he doesn’t necessarily give the response that we want. Of course it’s silly to expect God to provide us with a flash new BMW because we’ve asked for it, but what about the people facing serious illness, relationship problems or other bad news?

It’s hard to give an earthly answer to this question. How can we when we don’t know God’s plans?

This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t pray. And it doesn’t mean that we should only pray in one manner. The idea of hands together, eyes closed, burned into people’s minds from the days of primary school assemblies, still prevails. It’s a dangerous fallacy. Likewise, we don’t need to kneel on carefully knitted cushions, be in church or use elaborate and fancy language.

We have the opportunity to come to the King of kings just as we are. We can use our normal everyday language. We can sing songs, write poetry, draw pictures or just speak our prayers.

But we must never forget that it is our privilege to be able to carry everything to God in prayer. After all, we have direct access to God thanks to Jesus – what a privilege indeed.

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him"

1 John 5:14-15
